B Scan Ultrasound Per Eye in Indore

Best B Scan Ultrasound Per Eye in Indore

When the view to the retina is obscured by dense cataract, vitreous hemorrhage or corneal opacity, standard visual examination and OCT imaging cannot be used to assess the structures behind the blockage. With B-Scan Ultrasound in Indore at Niramay Indore India Eye Care, Dr. Birendra Jha can see past this obstruction and examine deeper eye structures.

What is B-Scan Ultrasound?

B-scan ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test that employs sound waves rather than light to generate a detailed cross-sectional image of the internal structures of the eye, including the vitreous cavity, retina and posterior wall of the eyeball. This test is extremely useful when direct visual examination is not possible because sound waves can penetrate media that block light, such as a dense cataract or bleeding within the eye.

The test is safe, painless and performed directly over the closed eyelid using a small handheld probe and coupling gel.

When is B-Scan Ultrasound Needed?

Our eye surgeon in Indore commonly uses B-Scan ultrasound for assessment of:

  • Bleeding or cataract causing retinal detachment and preventing the view
  • Vitreous hemorrhage of unknown cause or extent
  • Intravitreal masses or suspected intraocular tumors
  • Foreign bodies left in the eye after an injury
  • Pre-cataract or pre-vitrectomy assessment when retina cannot be directly visualized
  • Examination of the internal eye structures in the setting of significant trauma

Where B-scan Ultrasound Test is Needed

The B-scan ultrasound is usually recommended if patients present with:

  • Sudden loss of vision, dense cataract preventing examination of retina
  • Recent eye injury with possible internal damage
  • Vitreous hemorrhage preventing view of the retina
  • Quick flashes, floaters or shadowy vision loss where the retina can not be directly seen
  • Pre-surgical assessment when standard imaging is not available

How To Perform B-Scan Ultrasound

A small amount of gel is applied to the closed eyelid and a handheld ultrasound probe is gently moved across the surface while real-time images are seen on a screen. The entire test usually takes only a few minutes per eye and there are no injections or dilating drops involved.

What Comes Next After B-Scan Ultrasound?

Those findings might cause Dr. Jha to recommend:

  • Emergency vitrectomy surgery if retinal detachment or severe hemorrhage confirmed
  • Cataract surgery planning after clarification of the retinal status
  • Imaging or referral if a lump or tumor is suspected
  • Routine monitoring for stable vitreous hemorrhage expected to resolve gradually
  • Retained foreign body – surgic al removal
