Damage, leakage or blockage of the retinal blood vessels,
which can be the case in diabetes and a number of other diseases of the retina, often cannot be fully evaluated with a standard eye exam alone. Dr. Birendra Jha works at Niramay Indore India Eye Care in Indore. Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) helps him to see the blood supply of the retina directly and exactly pinpoint where the problem is.
Fundus fluorescein angiography is a special retinal imaging test. A fluorescent dye is injected into a vein in the arm and photographs are taken as the dye circulates through the blood vessels of the retina. The dye moves through healthy and diseased vessels in different ways so that the images formed clearly show regions of leakage, blockage or abnormal new blood vessel growth.
This detailed vascular mapping is especially helpful in conditions where the problem is with the retinal blood supply itself, providing information structural imaging tests such as OCT cannot provide alone.
Our eye specialist in Indore uses FFA to evaluate:
This test is generally recommended when the patients present with:
The pupils are dilated and a fluorescent dye is injected into a vein. A rapid series of retinal photographs is taken as the dye moves through the retinal blood vessels over the next few minutes. The images are carefully reviewed to identify leakage, blockage or abnormal vessels, which then helps to guide further treatment decisions.
Treatment may include: Depending on the results,
Dr Birendra Jha uses FFA judiciously only when the specific vascular detail it provides is absolutely necessary for diagnosis or planning of treatment, so that the test has definite clinical value and is not used as a routine unnecessary procedure.
